Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer Review

Dyson has completely transformed and revolutionised the world of hair care. Their first product launch saw them introduce the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer. It was easily one of the most highly anticipated releases to hit the beauty world in a long time. It certainly got everyone talking and for good reason but with an eye-watering price tag of a little under £300 is it worth it? I’ve been putting it to the test for a while to answer that question. Keeping reading my Dyson hair dryer review to find out more.

What is different about the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer?

I have the grey and pink dryer, it came presented in a beautiful pink leather case. The box includes three different magnetic attachment nozzles, a magnetic smoothing nozzle, a magnetic diffuser and a magnetic styling concentrator. It also came with a non-slip mat and storage hanger.

One of the first things you notice is how unlike any other hair dryer this actually is. It’s so foreign to me to be able to see right through the body of the dryer. It’s very light to hold and the weight is evenly distributed to allow for the perfect balance when holding it. Dyson specifically located the motor in the handle, unlike any other hair dryer. This is to avoid the dreaded arm ache from it being top-heavy. But also to allow for a quieter dryer, this is because the new 9v motor spins up to 110,000 times per minute at one inaudible frequency, making it faster, lighter and quieter than other motors.

At the back of the dryer there are four buttons, two on the handle, and two at the rear of the device. There is an on / off switch and a cooling button located on the handle, on the rear of the dryer you have a button to control the temperature, and a button to control the airflow speed. For both temperature and airspeed, there are three settings to choose from, they are fast drying, regular drying and styling. At the bottom of the handle there are lots of little air vent holes, this is to allow for the air to be passed out through them.

Regulates air temperature 20 times every second

Something else I noticed with this is how it sounds when you turn it on, it is unlike any other dryer I have ever heard.  Something worth noting is while drying my hair I have caught the on-off switch and accidentally turned it off. Maybe not the best location at the point you hold the handle. Dyson has fitted the Supersonic with a microprocessor, this measures and regulates air temperature 20 times every second, keeping the temperature under control, which helps prevent extreme heat damage to protect natural shine.

How Did It Work For Me?

The Supersonic dried my hair so much faster than any other hair dryer I have ever used. It required minimum effort, it almost felt that the Dyson did all of the work for me. I would use both the smoothing and styling nozzle. The smoothing gave a more precise dry, smoothing out any unwanted frizz, leaving sleek, straight, shiny hair.

When I dry my hair straight with the Supersonic, I don’t find the need to go over my hair with a straightening iron. All in all, preventing further damage to my hair, so that’s definitely a big plus for me. I’ve never found a hair dryer that I can achieve my desired straight hair from, without the need to straighten, so for me, this is a really big deal. I have quite thick hair, it usually takes me at least 25 minutes to section off and dry. When using the Dyson Supersonic that time is halved, if not less than halved.

My overall views on the Supersonic are that it worked well for me, I had great results I have not had before with another hair dryer. It is much quicker and more convenient to spend less time drying, without compromising on the end result. It’s probably easier for me to speak volumes about this, given that I didn’t actually shell out the £299.00 for it, but I do believe it is a game-changer for my hair care routine. When you consider that Dyson had over 100 engineers and scientists working on developing the Supersonic, where they produced 600 prototypes, and invested four years, along with obscene amounts of money in research. You can start to see why owning such a revolutionary piece of technology comes with such a high price.

Is It Worth It?

I won’t tell you that you need one, you definitely don’t, particularly at that price. I don’t know about you, but being a homeowner with bills, an outlay of almost £300.00 for a hair dryer is crazy to me. If you can afford it and would like one, by all means, go for it, you won’t regret it. You will be buying a great quality, top of the range product. I recommend might be worth booking into a salon that use the Supersonic, try before you buy as it were. It is a luxury purchase in my opinion, and if it weren’t for the fact I had been gifted it, I wouldn’t have been rushing out to part with that much money. It is approaching the holiday season, it might be worth adding it to your wishlist, see if Santa is feeling generous this year. Just a thought.

I hope you enjoyed this Dyson hair dryer review and found it helpful. Have you tried the Supersonic yet? What are your thoughts on it?

  1. Hi, £299 is indeed a lot of money what a fab gift to receive though. great that it reduces the dirtying time and frizz. i have a few Dyson gadgets but I’m not sure I would pay that amount for a hair dryer.

  2. What a thorough review! Thanks for sharing your honest opinion and experience. I don’t think I’d purchase this hair dryer, though. Last year I bought myself one of the Dyson fans and I was sorely disappointed. I returned it, even though I love my Dyson vacuum cleaner. Id definitely want to try it before I bought it haha

  3. I have really thick, curly hair. The fact you mention it fights frizz and HALVED drying time.. I need this in my life!!!
I hope to try it at some point, I can’t say I will be running out straight away and dropping 300 pound on a hair dryer though. But with hair like mine, if the results are good enough – I definitely think it would be worth the investment.

    Really great, in-depth review!

  4. Great review. I’ve been interested in this hairdryer before, and then I saw the price! It’s a shame it isn’t cheaper because it’s the same price as their vacuum cleaners! It’s great to know that you think it’s a really good hairdryer though! It would have been very frustrating if you didn’t like it!

  6. Ive heard good things about this hair dryer, although everyone seems to say its definitely not worth the buying price!! I generally let my hair dry naturally so wouldnt be much benefit to me, especially not for £300!

  8. I’ve heard so many great things about this hairdryer, I’m just not sure I can part with nearly £300 for it! Also, your photography on this post is incredible! x

  9. I have this hairdryer too and totally agree with your review. I can’t believe how much faster my hair dries with this compared to my old hairdryer. I’ve been using mine for years and don’t think I could use anything else now. So when this one finally gives up, I’ll think nothing of dropping £300 on another one!
