Louis Vuitton Pochette Metis Review

The Pochette Metis first launched in 2012 and in that time it has made quite an impact. So much so I feel that this could be considered a classic piece from Louis Vuitton. In 2014 it really took off and was the it bag for a long time thereafter. Everyone was desperate to get their hands on this sought after bag and it was near impossible to find for a while particularly in monogram and reverse monogram. Since then it has been launched in Monogram Empreinte leather in a variation of colours and it is often given seasonal updates in limited edition collections because it has had such huge popularity.

As soon as I set eyes on the Pochette Metis I loved it and wanted to get my hands on my very own. I was really struggling between the classic monogram and the Empreinte leather. For one reason or another, I opted for the black Empreinte and I couldn’t be happier with my choice. That said I do very much love the monogram Pochette Metis too and I would definitely love to get it. Having the same bag in different colours doesn’t bother me, the Pochette Metis is so versatile. This is my favourite bag in my collection to date, everything about it suits my life seamlessly. This was my first piece from Louis Vuitton and really the starting point for my love of the brand.

Let me introduce you to my pride and joy. I’ve had this glorious bag for around a year and a half and feel I can offer my thoughts on this and if I think it’s worth buying.

Let’s take a closer look at her

So as mentioned, this is the Pochette Metis in Black Empreinte leather with embossed monogram print throughout. The material is supple grained cowhide leather and complimented with shiny gold hardware. The bag itself is a classic messenger satchel silhouette and it comes with an adjustable crossbody strap that is also detachable. The style is very much classic, chic and incredibly versatile and also features a top handle with Louis Vuitton Paris embossed into it.

The bag has a flap opening with an S Lock closure, inside there are three compartments, two larger ones and a narrower slip pocket on the back inner portion. The textile lining is a grey material with a black vertical stripe throughout. On the rear of the bag is a pocket with zip closure again featuring gold hardware and a leather tab. The side profile of this bag is slightly reminiscent of an accordion-style silhouette.

At the time of writing this, the current price of this bag is £1670. Louis Vuitton tends to undergo price increases approximately two times a year. The Pochette Metis increases roughly £50-£150 per price increase.

Bag Specifications

  • 9.8 x 7.5 x 2.8 inches ( length x height x width )
  • Strap Drop: 18.9 inches
  • Strap Drop Max: 21.7 inches

Functionality & Wearability

In terms of functionality, this bag is one of the most functional I own. It is really spacious inside and I love the compartmentalised layout. The rear zipped compartment is handy for my phone, an iPhone 11 Max fits comfortably inside. I’m a small bag sort of gal and this is one of the larger bags I own believe it or not. I love having the freedom of extra space to play with and not having to stack my items inside like handbag Jenga. The crossbody style is my personal favourite and this one sits beautifully.

Since this is a black bag with gold hardware in a classic style it lends itself well to most outfits. I love the versatility of the Pochette Metis and the variations in which it can be worn. The strap adds further options allowing the wearer to choose between crossbody, shoulder bag or to carry with its top handle and detach the strap. Black has to be the most universal colour in my opinion which only adds to the versatility of this bag. It can also be taken from daytime into nighttime with no trouble at all.

Durability & Quality

The grained leather is extremely durable and hardwearing and even after a year and a half of using my bag still looks like new. The leather isn’t showing any signs of wear in the typical wear points; corners, stress points where I lift the front flap or on the gold hardware. It is worth mentioning that I kept my protective sticker over my gold lock on the front after seeing bags show wear here from constantly opening and closing. I also ensure I remain mindful when placing my bag down and I never place it on a floor. I wouldn’t say that I baby my bag but I do look after it as I do all of my items.

With the bag being Empreinte leather is makes it carefree in the sense you can use it in all weathers. The glazing around the sides is still perfectly preserved showing no wear signs at all. My specific bag is a made in Spain piece, the Pochette Metis is made in France, Spain, Italy and the USA.

Each piece is handmade to a high standard. You’d think that with it being a luxury item the quality will be second to none and in my case it is. However, this isn’t always the case, unfortunately. There are no imperfections in the quality of my bag, the leather placement is in the correct place, the patterns align throughout the bag. The gold hardware is a high shine finish which I prefer and the rear zipper is smooth. The stitching both inside and out is all symmetrical and neat. The outer glazing sealing the edges has a smooth finish.

Is it worth investing in?

Yes, yes, a million times yes! I cannot speak highly enough of this bag and I can see why it is one of their best sellers. The style is classic and timeless and has proven that it has stood the test of time. You really can’t go wrong with a black bag and the gold hardware is beautifully placed. As I’ve mentioned this is my favourite bag that I own and my most used. I actually love it so much so that I will purchase the monogram version at some point. I’m a firm believer in having the same item in multiple colours if it works for you. When you consider the cost of these items you have to love what you buy and use it.

I do feel that this bag is worth the investment and if you’re considering a Pochette Metis I’m here to tell you that it’s a fabulous bag.

You won’t regret adding her to your collection. I completely appreciate these luxury items are very highly-priced but when you stack Louis Vuitton up against the likes of Chanel or Dior they’re not so unreasonably priced. In terms of size, the Pochette Metis is comparable to a Chanel Medium Classic Flap in at 5k plus, or a medium Lady Dior at over 3k.

In the realms of luxury Louis Vuitton are much better with their pricing. I would never say they’re value for money because of course, they aren’t. When buying luxury you know the costs are going to be high but I guess that’s the nature of the beast. If you’re looking to add more items to your collection or begin a collection, Louis Vuitton is a great place to start. The classic canvas pieces are closer to the £1000 mark and a great first piece.

  1. It’s really beautiful. I do to have a Louis Vuitton bag and I think it been five or six years that I have the Louis Vuitton Alma PM and it still as if I got it yesterday. Definitely worth the investment!
