Louis Vuitton Nano Speedy Review

Easily one of Louis Vuitton’s most elusive and sought-after bags in recent years. Despite being nano she may be small, but she is mighty. Dressed in classic monogram with raw vachetta leather she is very much a classic piece. I’ve had this bag for around a year and a half, but she’s not had the wear she deserves.

I managed to purchase online when it was restocked at the same time as I was browsing. If I’m completely honest with myself I think it was the hype around the bag and my fear of missing out that made me buy it. I had always shied away from the vachetta leather because it’s too high maintenance for me. That’s probably why I’ve not worn it as much as I’d have liked and when I did, I babied it. It felt like more hassle than a joy to use for me personally. I’m considering parting way with it for that reason despite loving the overall style.

This post relates specifically to the original Nano Speedy. Louis Vuitton has since discontinued this bag and relaunched a modified model with a removable strap. I believe the new bag could be smaller too but without comparing them I’m not 100%.

Let’s take a closer look

As mentioned, the bag comes in one style, and it is the classic monogram canvas with vachetta trim, top handles, and strap. The monogram canvas is one piece of material with one-half of the bag being upside down. The strap is non-adjustable in vachette leather to match the trim that is piping around both sides of the bag and small tabs where the strap is fitted to the bag. The bag also features two small top handles. The bag comes with gold hardware and is just one open space without any pockets on the inside. The interior lining is a neutral microfibre fabric.

Despite being a nano bag, I think you’d be surprised by how much it can carry. I have no problem fitting my larger iPhone inside, but I do have to put it in on an angle and manoeuvre it into place. If you’re more of a basics kinda person this will be ideal for you. I’m 5’2 and I find the crossbody length good as I prefer my bags to sit a little lower on my hip.

Durability & Versatility

Being a nano bag there is only so versatile it can be in my opinion. It allows the wearer to carry the basics and no more, I find this to be very limiting. Accessing items can be awkward when the bag is filled. In terms of versatility due to the monogram canvas, you will also find limitations if you were logos or patterned clothes, the patterns might be too much together. I think monogram is a beautiful print and I prefer to wear it with a plain, neutral outfit so it works well for me. How you style the bag is very much down to your personal style.

The top handles as so small that you can only carry in your hand rather than on your wrist or crook of the arm. I find it a bit weird to carry top handle having such a long non-adjustable strap. Because the crossbody strap is not adjustable it makes it less versatile for the individual as one length doesn’t suit all.

As for durability, the canvas is strong wearing, I find but the issue this bag has is with the raw vachetta leather. The leather is most delicate on a new item as it hasn’t built up and protective patina. Vachetta leather can be a real love-hate relationship. If left untreated it can mark easily and you can’t get the stains out. There are protective sprays you can use to prevent watermarks and stains and it’s a great option. A great way to put a very slight patina on the leather is to place it on a windowsill to allow the sun to get to it, turn for an even patina every day. It will remain a raw leather, but it does give it a little more resistance than brand new vachetta.

My thoughts and is it worth it

I think this is very dependent on your lifestyle and how you feel about vachetta leather. For me, sadly it hasn’t been a great purchase because I’m a bit nervous about the leather. I expected I might be and in hindsight, I ought not to have been as hasty to purchase it. It is a beautiful bag, and the speedy line is a long-standing favourite with global popularity. Since buying this Louis Vuitton has released the Nano speedy in some limited-edition collections. They also have a Speedy 20 which is bigger than the Nano and, in my opinion, more practical, the strap is adjustable and removable, unlike the Nano.

When I bought the Nano Speedy it was priced at £755 which I didn’t feel was bad. It has since increased and has been discontinued. The new model with a removable strap is £1220 which is considerably more for the same bag virtually. From a personal perspective, it wasn’t worth it to me because I just don’t use it. That’s not to say it isn’t worth it to someone else. Ultimately, an item is worth whatever the individual is prepared to pay and the value they place on it. If this is the bag you have your heart set on and it will bring you joy, then you should get it and love it. I’m a firm believer in buying what you love.

  1. I know that this bag would annoy me, due to its size. I like crossbody bags, but like them to be a bit bigger. I’m also not the biggest fan of the traditional LV monogramming, but I’m loving the look of the new summer collection. It’s disappointing when a bag doesn’t live up to expectations, but you can always sell it, which is brilliant! x

I have just bought the new Nano but having buyers remorse as it’s not as big and was googling reviews/comparisons of the nano bag and your blog came up. If you are thinking about selling yours or decide to sell it, Please let me know!
