Wouldn’t it be wonderful to be able to treat ourselves to a professional facial each week, I would move into the spa if I could afford it. It is without doubt one of my favourite places to visit and spend time, I always feel so rejuvenated afterwards. As lovely as a weekly spa trip would be, for most of us it isn’t practical, something more realistic which offers a spa like facial at home is the PMD Microdermabrasion Device*. You can achieve the same great results from using this device as you would from a spa. Of course it doesn’t give you that pampered, well rested feeling you get from a spa, but then it doesn’t cost what you would pay for weekly spa visits either.
The principle behind microdermabrasion is essentially to break-up and remove dead skin cells that can cause our complexions to look a little dull. In doing this you are allowing healthier cell turnover whilst promoting collagen production. It can help with excess oil and enlarged pore whilst evening out texture and skintone too. I am a huge fan of microdermabrasion treatments and I can see a noticeable difference in my overall complexion after every treatment. If we don’t exfoliate on a regular basis (which I am sometimes guilty of myself) dead skin cells build up on the surface of the skin and a regular, everyday cleanser just doesn’t cut the mustard when it comes to removing them. The idea of old, dead skin (*gag*) chilling there on my face kinda creeps me out a little bit.
Having never tried an at home microdermabrasion device, my inner skincare junkie did a little squeal of excitement when I was asked by PMD if I would like to try it myself! I couldn’t reply to the email fast enough. I was so excited for it to arrive so I could put it to the test.
The day the mail man brought this I think I may have got to the door quicker than Charlie, my Jack Russell did, and he travels quicker than the speed of light! No joke! He also likes to then eat said post or packages! Another reason why it was in my best interest to be quicker than him!
Nevermind! We all have our burden to bear! Lets get back to the device!
So inside of the box you also get the obligatory user manual and instructions, but this also comes with a DVD, because lets just be real here, who even reads the instructions anyway? Tinkering for the right amount of time tends to make anything work eventually, right? Alongside that you of course get the main attraction, the microdermabrasion device, it comes with an assortments of discs which you fit into the top before the treatment, the smaller discs are for your face, while the larger discs are for your body. You get both blue and green discs, the blue are for a lighter treatment and targeted towards more sensitive skin types, and the green more towards normal.
Before I let it loose on my face I tested it on the back of my hand, the disc spins around just under the clear cap, while the device itself acts as a vacuum to clear away the dead skin once the disc has lifted it. I’m not going to lie, it was a peculiar sensation to begin with, definitely not painful or uncomfortable in any way, just a little unusual initially. I used it from the centre of my face working outwards and I never went over the same area more than twice.
Purely because of the nature of this device my skin did have some mild redness initially, it soon went down to reveal a brightened appearance and visibly reduced pores right from the very first use. My skin felt baby soft to touch, any dry patches were gone. I was actually surprised by how much of a difference I could see from the first use.
I use this on a weekly basis as recommended by PMD and I have to say I am really impressed with the results. My skin is notably brighter and more plumped, that may be because my products are more easily absorbed with having the dead skin cells removed, I’m not sure where the credit lies for this. My pores remain consistently smaller and sometimes barely visible, FYI my pores are usually huge, like I could stash my belongings in them huge! Overall my skin looks and feels considerably healthier and brighter, I don’t have any texture at all and my skintone is completely even.
For me this has worked really well, I have oily combination skin and I tend not to suffer any sensitivity. I don’t find the device to be harsh on the skin so I do feel this would be suitable for most skin types. I don’t suffer with any acne scarring so I can’t offer a personal opinion, but this device is said to really help with reducing the appearance of scarring on the face too.
Have you ever tried any at home facial alternatives like this? I’d love to know.
