There’s just something ever so lovely and cosy about this time of year that I can’t get enough of. The colours are beautiful and the sound of the crunchy leaves underfoot is so wonderfully satisfying. The nights get a little shorter and the air gets a little cooler which all adds to the cosy autumnal vibes I love and adore. Our food gets heartier and our drinkers hotter and perfect for wrapping cold hands around. Sweater weather means the chunky knits and snuggly coats make an appearance along with cosy scarves and warm boots. Then there are the autumn scents with their delicious notes of clove, spiced apple and pumpkin mixed with heady notes of cinnamon stick. There is so much to love about this time of year and so many ways to embrace and welcome autumn. Looking for things to do this autumn? You need my autumn bucket list.
Autumn Bucket List
Decorate The Home
There’s nothing I love more than switching up the decor around the home. As soon as September comes round the pumpkins are out. It’s great to see more and more UK stores embracing autumn-themed decor each year. TK Maxx and Next are the two main shops I head to for new autumn decor pieces. I’ve got a dedicated post on Autumnal home decor and how I style the home at this time of year.
Visit A Pumpkin Patch
What better way to spend an autumn day than visiting a pumpkin patch? This has gained huge popularity in the UK in recent years and I love seeing how many more places are getting involved. It’s a great day out for everyone and it has to be the ultimate autumnal activity. There’s a great spot in central Scotland for pumpkin picking that I have a dedicated post about.
Carve A Pumpkin
Pumpkin carving is such a fun Halloween tradition and you can make some great things with the leftover pumpkin you don’t use. I love seeing how everyone carves their pumpkins, some designs are so creative! I’d love to be able to carve such cool designs. Maybe one year!
Bake A Seasonal Sweet Treat
Homemade food and treats are the ultimate in seasonal comfort and certain seasons call for them more than others. When the weather begins to cool there’s nothing better than coming home to a delicious seasonal treat. My personal favourite autumn baked treat has to be anything with apples, I adore apple pie and crumbles with custard.
Collect Conkers & Pine Cones
Pine cones and conkers are in abundance around this time of year. They make for great autumn home decor pieces to scatter around the house or fill a bowl and use as a centrepiece. If you’re into crafts you could get really creative with these seasonal finds.
Take An Autumnal Walk In The Crunchy Leaves
Get wrapped up in a cosy coat and head out for an autumnal walk, taking in all of the glorious red and orange colours as the leaves crunch under your feet. Autumn walks are my favourite and everywhere looks so pretty blanketed in burnt orange leaves.
Burn Seasonal Candles
The cosy season calls for burning candles and filling the home with delicious scents. Bath and Body Works win hands down for the best in autumn candles. Leaves is my all-time favourite closely followed by Pumpkin Pecan Waffles. Good news for all my fellow UK based Bath and Body Works fans, Next is stocking some products online with rumours of them coming into stores too.
Toast Marshmallows On An Open Fire
Is there anything more autumnal than enjoying toasted marshmallows over an open fire? This is something I love to do on Bonfire night when I’m all wrapped up in cosy clothes. You can often find them at seasonal markets too.
Get Cosy For A Halloween Movie Day or Night
Who doesn’t love a guilt-free day or night of watching movies with your favourite snacks? This is the perfect time of year to snuggle up under a blanket as yummy candles flicker away and have a movie marathon. My personal favourite has to be the Harry Potter boxset for those days.
Have The First PSL Of The Season
You know it’s autumn when the good old pumpkin spice lattes are back on the menu. It’s not only Starbucks bringing us the PSL, Greggs is having a piece of that action too. Greggs lattes are so good so I bet they make a mean pumpkin spice latte! PSL not your jam? Fear not, they have all kinds of seasonal favourites to pick from or play is safe with warming hot chocolate and marshmallows.
Watch Fireworks With A Hot Chocolate
I don’t know about you but there’s something so quintessentially autumnal about wrapping up to watch fireworks with a hot chocolate. I adore the smell of burning embers, it’s such a seasonal scent that encapsulates autumn bonfires and fireworks perfectly.
Bring Out The Cosy Jumpers, Coats, Scarves & Boots
Autumn fashion is the season to beat. I for one cannot wait to swap out my summer wardrobe for my autumn one. Cosy jumpers, teddy coats and chunky boots are my favourites! The colours and styles at this time of year just speak to me on another level.
Make Warming Homemade Soup & Add Crusty Bread
The delicious scent of homemade soup is the ultimate home comfort and just what we need when it’s getting colder. Pair it with hunks of crusty bread with a helping of butter and you have a match made in heaven. There’s nothing better than hearty homemade food at this time of year.
Take Autumnal Photos
There is so much to love about autumn it would be criminal not to capture some images of it all. Country walks in the crunchy leaves, falling pine cones and conkers, autumn decor, hot chocolate and cake, yummy homemade meals, flickering candles to name a few things.
Take A Bath With Some Lush Halloween Treats
Indulgent hot baths with some Lush bath goodies is one of my most loved things about the cooler seasons. There’s something so soothing about soaking in a hot bath full of bubbles. Lush always have fab seasonal treats to pick out to have autumn or Halloween themed bathtime.
Read Harry Potter Books & Watch The Movies
Witches and wizards, flying cars and giant spiders, mystery-solving and adventure having, is there anything better to watch and read at this time of year? I think not. This is a tradition for us around this time of year to snuggle up and watch the Harry Potter boxset and I love it.
Change Up Skincare For The New Season
The change in season calls for a change in our skincare routine. Our skin needs extra hydration and nourishment from the harsher weather. I have a dedicated post on my transitional autumn skincare routine to keep my skin in good shape as the colder weather and central heating come into play.
Switch Up Summer to Autumn Makeup
Now that you’ve switched up your skincare for the new season it’s time to turn your attention to your makeup bag. Swap out the warm summer tones for gorgeous vampy berry and plum tones. Charlotte Tilbury’s Vintage Vamp eyeshadow palette is perfect for this season.
