The Ultimate List Of Non Scary Halloween Movies & TV Shows

It’s officially spooky season and I don’t know about you but I am so frickin excited! I live for this time of year and I like to try and embrace it in its entirety. However, I can’t cope with scary movies, do you see my problem? The tension, fear, frights and all-around scare factor is a big no for me. Yes, I am a scaredy-cat and I’m not ashamed to admit it. If I watch a horror film it literally plays on my mind for days. It can be tricky trying to find things to watch that combine the Halloween vibe without the scariness. I’ve trawled the options out there for anyone who, like myself, hates horrors but wants to enjoy Halloween movies or shows. It’s actually surprised me just how many options there are so struggle no more with non scary Halloween movies and TV shows.

Non Scary Halloween Movies

Hocus Pocus

If Hocus Pocus isn’t the ultimate non-scary Halloween movie I don’t know what is. Our favourite trio of witches resurrected after 300 years are back to take revenge on the children of Salem. It is up to Max, Dani and Alison to end what they started and restore peace in Salem. A Halloween must-see.

Practical Magic

Follow two witch sisters, raised by their eccentric aunts in a small town navigate small-minded prejudice and a curse that threatens to prevent them from finding lasting love. Filled with laughter, love, tears, margarita fulled karaoke nights and adventure. A personal favourite of mine. I always have the urge to colour my hair a gorgeous shade of auburn after Nicole Kidman’s character after I watch this.

Harry Potter Boxset

Is there a better movie series to sink your teeth into for spooky season? The Harry Potter saga is iconic and it would be a sin to not watch them over Halloween. Grab the duvet, a bowl of sweets and cosy up for the ultimate Halloween movie day!

Coco

The most lovely story of Miguel, who pursues his love for singing in spite of his family’s ban on music. He accidentally stumbles into the Land of the Dead, where he learns about his great-grandfather who was a legendary singer.

The Nightmare Before Christmas

Jack Skellington, king of Halloween Town discovers Christmas Town and is instantly enchanted. It soon becomes an obsession of his that leads him to abduct Santa Claus in an attempt to bring Christmas to his home town. Christmas is a very confusing holiday for the residents of Halloween Town.

Frankenweenie

When young Victor’s pet dog Sparky is hit by a car, Victor decides to bring him back to life the only way he knows how. However, the resurrected dog wreaks havoc and terror in the hearts of Victor’s neighbours. Victor has to convince them and his parents that despite his appearance, Sparky’s still the good loyal friend he always has been.

Coraline

When Coraline moves to an old house, she feels bored and neglected by her parents. She finds a hidden door, behind which lies an alternative world that closely mirrors her own, but, in many ways, is better. She is delighted by her discovery until her other mother and family try to keep her there forever.

Hotel Transylvania

Dracula, who operates a high-end resort away from the human world, goes into overprotective mode when a boy discovers the resort and falls for the count’s teenaged daughter.

Hotel Transylvania 2

Dracula and his friends try to bring out the monster in his half-human, half-vampire grandson in order to keep Mavis from leaving the hotel.

Twilight

High-school student Bella Swan has always been a bit of a misfit meets Edward Cullen, a handsome but mysterious person. Their lives soon become entwined and Bella learns that vampires and werewolves are not just legends. A love triangle soon ensues between Bella, Edward and Jacob as they navigate outside threats that could prove deadly.

Edward Scissorhands

Edward, a synthetic man with scissor hands, is taken in by Peg, a kind Avon lady after the passing of his inventor. Things soon take a turn for the worst when he is blamed for a crime he did not commit.

Maleficent

Maleficent is a kind-hearted fairy, who is deceived by the love of her life, Stefan. Hell hath no fury as a fairy scorned, she places a curse on his Stefans daughter as her revenge. Over the years she learns that the Princess may be the only person who can restore peace between the humans and magical beings of the Moors. My personal favourite of the reimagined Disney films.

Casper

Carrigan Crittenden hires paranormal expert Dr James Harvey to exorcise the ghosts from her mansion. The situation soon changes as his daughter befriends Casper, a friendly ghost.

The Addams Family

When a man claiming to be Fester, the missing brother of Gomez Addams, arrives at the Addams’ home, the family is thrilled. However, Morticia begins to suspect the man is a fraud since he cannot recall details of Fester’s life.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Benjamin vows to seek revenge from the judge who framed him for a crime that he didn’t commit. In order to do so, he reopens his barbershop where the customers go in but never leave.

Beetlejuice

The spirits of a deceased couple are harassed by an unbearable family that has moved into their home, and hire a malicious spirit to drive them out. Enter Beetlejuice.

Corpse Bride

When Victor is practising his wedding vows in the woods, he accidentally gets married to a skeleton-like creature called Emily who whisks him off to the land of the dead.

The Dark Knight

When the menace known as the Joker wreaks havoc and chaos on the people of Gotham, Batman must accept one of the greatest psychological and physical tests of his ability to fight injustice. Heath Ledger, arguably the best Joker gives a brilliantly mad and psychotic performance.

Goosebumps

R L Stine, the author of “Goosebumps”, is shocked when demons from his books come to life and wreak havoc in Delaware. Later, he, his daughter, Hannah and her friend Zach strive to put things right.

Ghostbusters

An absolute classic! When Peter Venkman, Raymond Stantz and Egon Spengler lose their jobs as scientists, they start an establishment called Ghostbusters to fight evil ghosts lurking in New York City.

Scary Movie

Halloween spoof. A year after disposing of the body of a man they accidentally killed, a group of teenagers are stalked by a bumbling serial killer.

Joker

In Gotham City, mentally troubled comedian Arthur Fleck is disregarded and mistreated by society. He then embarks on a downward spiral of revolution and bloody crime. This path brings him face-to-face with his alter ego: The Joker. Joaquin Phoenix gives a truly compelling performance as the Joker in this movie. A brilliant origins story.

Shaun Of The Dead

Shaun is a salesman whose life has no direction. However, his uneventful life takes a sudden turn when he has to singlehandedly deal with an entire community of zombies.

Gremlins

Billy’s father gets him a pet from China with three very specific instructions. However, when Billy does not follow them, it unleashes a horde of monsters.

What We Do In The Shadows

Vampire housemates try to cope with the complexities of modern life and show a newly turned hipster some perks of being undead. They are followed by a TV crew for a reality-style show as they navigate modern life.

Blade

Blade, who is part vampire and part mortal, becomes a vampire hunter to protect human beings trying to prevent vampires from taking control over the human race.

Saw

Two men awaken to find themselves on the opposite sides of a dead body, each with specific instructions to kill the other or face consequences. These two are the latest victims of the Jigsaw killer. This one might be a little borderline for scariness but it’s more of a thriller and it’s as far as I go when it comes to horror movies, hence why it gets an honourable mention.

TV Shows

Stranger Things

In 1980s Indiana, a group of young friends witness supernatural forces and secret government exploits. As they search for answers to weird goings-on, they unravel a series of extraordinary mysteries. Hands down, one of the best shows I’ve watched.

The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina

This adaptation of the Sabrina The Teenage Witch tale is a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror and the occult. Sabrina Spellman wrestles to reconcile her dual nature of half-witch, half-mortal while standing against evil forces that threaten her.

Carnival Row

A growing population of mythological immigrant creatures struggles to coexist with humans after the creatures exotic homelands are invaded by man. The creatures are forbidden to live, love or have any freedom, but hope lives in darkness.

The Vampire Diaries

The series is set in the fictional town of Mystic Falls, Virginia, a town charged with supernatural history. It follows the life of Elena Gilbert, a teenage girl who has just lost both parents. She meets and falls in love with 162-year-old vampire Stefan Salvatore.

The Witcher

The Witcher, Geralt, a mutated monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world in which people often prove more wicked than the beasts.

Locke & Key

After the Lockes move into Keyhouse, Bode makes a new acquaintance and a startling discovery. Bode and his siblings soon begin finding keys with reality-bending powers around the house that may be connected with their father’s death.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer

I couldn’t not include this blast from the past now, could I? Watch or rewatch Buffy Summers as she tries to live a normal life in high school while embracing her responsibilities and destiny as a hunter of demons and vampires.
