Shea Moisture 100% Virgin Coconut Oil Hair Care

In a bid to make more of an effort and really up my hair care game I’ve been testing out some new products to try to find ones that work well for me. I continually find myself gravitating towards all things coconut when I look around the hair care aisles, there’s just something about the scent that it so indulgent and delicious, despite not actually liking it in food I am utterly obsessed with in beauty products.

Recently I’ve been using a shampoo* and conditioner* by Shea Moisture from their 100% Virgin Coconut Oil range. I was expecting this to have an intense coconut scent so you can imagine my surprise at barely being able to decent any coconut at all. The scent you get with this is more like a raw coconut combined with a very earthy fragrance rather than the sweet and tropical coconut smell I was hoping for. Despite the smell not being as I’d have expected it definitely wasn’t bad.

Shea Moisture is a natural, organic, and cruelty free hair and body care specialist. The company was founded back in 1912 by a widowed mother of four who started out selling shea butter and African black soap, all of which were handmade. Today the brand strives to provide only the best natural, fair trade ingredients cultivated from all over the world. You won’t find any harmful ingredients in any of the Shea Moisture products.

When I first used the shampoo and conditioner I did so just as I would any others I’ve used. My hair felt thoroughly rinsed so I went about styling and drying as normal. I did use a different mousse and I noticed once my hair was dry, under the roots had a residue left which at that point I put down to being over zealous with the mousse. The second time I used the shampoo and conditioner I didn’t use any leave in products and I noticed the same residue left in my hair. I began to realise it had to be down to the shampoo because I don’t put conditioner as far up as my roots. From that point I did overcome that issue but only with excessive rinsing and scrubbing of my scalp which I’m pretty sure isn’t generally necessary. This is the only shampoo I’ve ever experienced this with which is unfortunate.

I had so hoped and expected to love these products and I’m really disappointed that the shampoo at least didn’t work for me. I have since noticed a few other people complain about this so I’m glad it wasn’t just me. As a brand I’d heard so many great things, and although this particular shampoo didn’t work out it wouldn’t stop me from trying others.

My experience with the conditioner was a far more successful one. I left this on the lengths and ends of my hair for around 20 minutes to let it really sink in. It rinsed off well, easier than the shampoo surprisingly! It left my hair feeling really silky and soft, it had a beautiful shine to it and it felt really healthy. I actually really like the conditioner and I fully intend on using it up. I wish I could say the same about the shampoo, I hate to leave negative feedback on products but I’ve got to give my honest opinion.

I’m interested in trying out the shea butter shampoo and condition because I’ve heard good things about them and I really don’t want to let this put me off the brand. Everyone deserves a second chance, right?

  1. I’ve tried this recently before at my girlfriend’s house….it smells soooo good! Like I’m surprise I forgot to back and buy one at the hair store honestly. Great review and such pretty pics! I like the flatlays 💕😁💁🏽‍♀️

  2. coconut oil never really ‘soaks in’ for me, so maybe that is the deal with the shampoo. I keep mine blonde so I can have bright blues or purples, so moisturizing shampoo is a huge must for me (and I also don’t wash very often, because hello, breakage!). Thanks for this review, I def won’t waste my time or money!

  3. Gorgeous photos and I might have to try the coconut oil conditioner as they usually really work for my hair. It’s ashame the shampoo didnt work as well.

  4. Ah I expected to read that these were amazing but to think they don’t smell of coconut would put me off a little I think! I love your honesty in your reviews xx

  5. It’s a shame the shampoo didn’t work for you, however the conditioner sounds amazing! I’d love to try it x

  6. This would be a no from me, excessive scrubbing is a no no when it’s just a basic shampoo. Maybe the conditioner as a mask on its own sounds great but wouldn’t get me to buy it.

  7. Sucks when hair products don’t work out! Ends up making you feel dirtier than before your shower. Conditioner sounds nice though x

  8. I don’t know what your hair type is as I’ve just stumbled across this post, but I would really recommend the Fruit Fusion Coconut Water Weightless Shampoo by the same brand – it doesn’t leave any residue and my hair always feels super shiny and clean afterwards, and I’m sure it would pair well with the more moisturing Coconut conditioner that you’ve used above 🙂 I hope this helps and if you try it out let me know what you think!
